What is the Centre for the Mathematics of Symmetry and Computation?


The Centre for the Mathematics of Symmetry and Computation (CMSC) is a Centre located within the UWA School of Mathematics and Statistics. Directed by 2009 WA Scientist of the Year Professor Cheryl Praeger, we provide a focus for mathematical research and research training in the areas of group theory, combinatorics and computation, to give mathematics the increased visibility it deserves. News


  • Michael Giudici moved from his Australian Research Fellowship to a position as an Associate Professor in February.
  • Alice Niemeyer is back from an extended visit to the RWTH Aachen, Germany.
  • The Centre had its first ever research retreat, in Yanchep on 11 - 14 April 2012. Staff and students worked together on problems, forming new collaborations. We are now working on several of the problems discussed and hope to get a few publications as a result of this trip. This was a very successful venture and we hope to make it an annual event. The event was attended by John Bamberg, Brian Corr, Alice Devillers, Michael Giudici, Wei Jin, Cai-Heng Li, Sylvia Morris, Guang Rao, Gordon Royle, Akos Seress and Anne Thomas (University of Sydney).
  • Alice Devillers visited James Parkinson at the University of Sydney in December 2011, and worked with James and Hendrik Van Maldeghem.
  • Mark Ioppolo and David Raithel are due to complete their honours.
  • Michael Giudici, John Bamberg and Murray Smith put on a morning of activities for Shenton College students.
  • Neil Gillespie completed his PhD on Neighbour Transitive Codes in Hamming Graphs. His graduation ceremony was held on March 29, 2012.
  • Cheryl Praeger attended the IMU Executive Committee in Rio, Brazil. Meetings were held from April 21 -23, and the conference was held on April 24-25, 2012.
  • Cheryl Praeger attended the ARC College of Experts April 30 - May 5, 2012.
  • Akos Seress gave a seminar talk at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand, February 24, 2012.
  • Akos Seress gave a colloquium and a seminar talk at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado, USA, March 22 - 23, 2012
